I’ve been in love with Gavin since high school. He broke my heart back then, something I’m not keen to forget, which makes our current situation challenging. Our best friends are married, and we’re constantly thrown together because of that connection. When those same friends ask me for a favor, one that is life-changing for all of us, I don’t even question how close it will bring me to Gavin. I simply say yes.

I’m not sure what I did to turn Brystol against me, but whatever it was, I’m ready to make amends. I might even tell her that she was all I could see back in high school. When our best friends ask Brystol to be their surrogate, I have mixed feelings, to say the least. Nothing will keep me from supporting her in every way possible because among those feelings are admiration and love for the kind girl I used to know…and even more for the woman she’s become.

Neither of us were prepared for the trials and tribulations that come with not just pregnancy but the surrogacy process—including the strain it can put on everyone involved. Nor could we predict the powerful emotions or the sheer joy of growing a life. There is no way we could have predicted the heartache that would follow.
